Deem Symposium
The Deem Symposium, “Designing for Dignity: A Convening of Possibilities 002,” hosted in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, was the return of an ambitious event designed to explore how design can drive large-scale social impact. Anchored by the five themes of Deem Journal—Dignity, Pedagogy, Equity, Place, and Climate—the symposium united designers, practitioners, and community members in a space for collaboration and critical dialogue.
Central to the success of the symposium was a cohesive branding system that brought the concept of “possibilities” to life. This identity balanced a dynamic, forward-looking vision with the thoughtful inclusivity at the core of Deem Journal’s mission. The visual and verbal language unified all aspects of the event, from promotional materials to on-site activations, creating a seamless experience across platforms.
Building on this foundation, the symposium expanded in 2024 to include participatory workshops and interactive sessions held at both MCA Chicago and locations throughout the city. This multi-modal approach deepened engagement and extended the reach of the programming. The Reference Room, an ongoing component of the symposium, was reimagined to feature influential texts selected by the presenters, alongside works by authors connected to Chicago. A centerpiece of this space was the Cabinet of Curiosities, a bespoke installation by Norman Teague that invited exploration and discovery.
The integration of storytelling elements and thoughtfully designed experiences underscored the symposium’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections. A comprehensive brand strategy ensured the event’s themes were consistently communicated, while the hybrid format expanded access to a global audience.
This reimagined symposium positions Deem Journal as a leader in using design to address critical social issues. By aligning its identity with its purpose, Deem has created a platform that not only inspires dialogue but also mobilizes action for systemic change.
